Recall Alert: Volkswagen Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport
Volkswagen is recalling about 2,000 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs from model year 2024 because their engines can fail while driving. “In rare cases,” Volkswagen says, the problem can trigger a vehicle fire.
VW tells federal safety officials that “contamination during the bearing production process may have caused an increased particle occurrence in the engine oil circuit,” which can lead to wear around the connecting rod bearings. That can loosen those connections.
Drivers would likely know their car was developing a problem, Volkswagen says, because “continuously rising bearing play leads to excessive engine noise.” But if an owner continued to drive despite the noise, “this condition may result in engine failure, potentially causing a loss of motive power while driving.”
The company says it is aware of 12 claims of damage related to the issue.
Volkswagen is still developing a testing procedure that will allow dealerships to find and fix the at-risk engines. When it comes, it will be free.
By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
Manufacturers attempt to contact every owner, but they don’t always reach them all with the news. Find out if your car has any outstanding repair orders at our recall center.
